With the purpose of raising the awareness of the population, increasing self-responsibility and promoting the changes
necessary to make cancer a controlled chronic disease, Cuba joins, every February 4, the celebration of World Cancer
Day. Specialists agree that it is necessary to increase the awareness of the population to join the research tests available in
the National Health System, in addition to promoting self-care and the practice of healthy lifestyles, which contribute to
reducing risk factors associated with the disease. Among the actions for this year, the celebration of the "Day of the mole in Cuba" is planned, in greeting to the 11th
National Campaign for education, prevention and diagnosis of skin cancer.
Likewise, the Primary Health Care will continue to promote benign neck pathology consultations for the care of women
with normal cytology and lower genital tract alteration.
Cancer treatment is a priority for the national health system, with a greater presence of the disease in women than in
men. The main locations were the lung for both sexes, followed by the prostate in men and the breast in women. The
highest percentage of cancer cases in Cuba is concentrated in the ages 60 years and over.
This 2021, a year also marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebration for World Cancer Day will continue under the
slogan "I am and I'm going to", which for several years focused the global campaign to reduce the impact of that
pathology.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) refers that people who suffer from the disease are at greater risk of
suffering severe COVID-19 and mortality is higher due to the vulnerabilities of patients.
In the Region of the Americas, cancer is the second leading cause of death and an estimated 4 million people were
diagnosed in 2020 and 1.4 million died from that cause
