Cuba today reaches 10 months of presence of Covid-19 throughout the territory and to date 104 pregnant women have
been confirmed with the disease, but none died. According to a recent report by the head of Epidemiology of the
Caribbean island's Ministry of Public Health, Francisco Durán, that was the number of pregnant women infected with the
SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the disease, until January 8. In addition, 17 puerperal or recently delivered women suffered from the disease and in two women the new coronavirus
was confirmed while they were undergoing an ectopic pregnancy, a state in which the fertilized egg implants outside the
uterus. The data refer that of the 104 diagnosed, 20 percent were under 20 years of age and 37 percent were diagnosed with
Covid-19 from 14 to 27 weeks of gestation. Regarding the possibility of a greater risk of contracting the coronavirus during those nine months, Durán specified that
the danger of contagion is the same for all people, but in the case of pregnant women they have more possibilities to
develop serious forms of the disease.
"In addition, going through Covid-19 while a pregnant woman increases the chances of premature birth and, as a
consequence, the newborn goes to neonatal care units," he said. In Cuba, most of the pregnant women with Covid-19 presented a stable clinical evolution, as only one needed intensive
care. Data from the Pan American Health Organization indicate that in September 2020 in 14 countries of the Americas 60,458
pregnant women had been diagnosed with the coronavirus and 458 died. The director of the National Center for Medical Genetics, Beatriz Marcheco, explained to Prensa Latina that during a
study of this branch of 1,182 patients who had Covid-19, the seven pregnant women included in the research passed
the disease without presenting complications. Neither did they find any repercussions on the fetus, nor was there evidence of any inconvenience in the state of
gestation after applying the treatments used on the island against the SARS-CoV-2 virus for any patient, the expert
specified. ‘Cuban pregnant women have the possibility of being identified for follow-up from the first trimester. In times of Covid-19,
population and contact surveillance was carried out and this provided greater advantages for early treatment of
diagnosed pregnant women, '' he said. In 2020, Cuba reached a maternal mortality rate of 40 per 100,000 live births and
the infant mortality rate was 4.9, one of the lowest in the Americas. The Cuban health system, free for all, has among its priorities the Maternal and Child Care Program, implemented since
1983 to organize regulations related to reproductive, childhood and adolescent health
