December 22 reminds us of the moment in which Fidel, in the Plaza de la Revolución, together with the literacy teachers,
declared to Cuba “Territory free of Illiteracy” (1961): “We have won a great battle, and we must call it that : battle,
because the victory against illiteracy in our country has been achieved through a great battle, with all the rules of a great
battle. A battle started by the teachers, which the popular literacy teachers continued, and which took on an extraordinary
and decisive momentum when our youthful masses, integrated into the “Conrado Benítez” literacy army, joined this fight. "
There are teachers who mark you for life, for one reason or another, for your righteousness or your intelligence, for your
passion or for your closeness to the students, for your strength and your exact calligraphy on the blackboard. There are
teachers who challenge you.
There are others who praise you, and when you make a mistake, they are deeply disappointed and even cry. There are
teachers who accompany you in your life story, they listen to your problems, they detect your mistakes, they trace the
inaccurate paths of the future. And you believe him, although afterwards nothing resembles his predictions.
With those, with those who leave their soul in the classrooms, with those who are subjected daily to critical glances from
wondering and restless boys, with those who forget their problems and are in this diverse learning space that is a school,
shredding books and imparting knowledge; With those, I prefer to stay, and those, I prefer to hug, thank, describe.
